MALALA POSTERS

Malala Yousafzai is a Pakistani school pupil and education activist from the town of Mingora in the Swat District of Pakistan's northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. She is known for her education and women's rights activism in the Swat Valley, where at times girls have been banned from attending school. In early 2009, at the age of 11–12, Yousafzai wrote a blog under a pseudonym for the BBC detailing her life and her views on promoting education for girls. The following summer, a New York Times documentary was filmed about her life. Yousafzai began to rise in prominence, giving interviews in print and on television and taking a position as chairperson of the District Child Assembly Swat. She has since been nominated for the International Children's Peace Prize by Desmond Tutu and the Nobel Peace Prize, being the youngest nominee in history for the latter. She is the winner of Pakistan's first National Youth Peace Prize. On 9 October 2012, Yousafzai was shot in the head and neck in an assassination while returning home on a school bus. In the days immediately following the attack, she remained unconscious and in critical condition, but later her condition improved enough for her to be sent to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham in the United Kingdom for intensive rehabilitation.Students paid Tribute to the efforts of Malala Yousafzai by taking Part in a poster competition.

A WALK TO REMEMBER

“We want peace in our land,” was one of the slogans shouted by students staging a peace walk. A large number of social activists, elders of the Swat Qaumi Jirga, political workers and students greeted the new year by coming together to express solidarity and unity with people in other parts of the country. The participants resolved to defend and work for peace in the valley which was restored after three years of mayhem. “Proper education is only possible if there is peace. Nothing substantial can happen amid all the disorder and mayhem,” said a student participant of the walk. President Swat Hotel Association said: “We are still fearful about peace in the future because our civil government is still nothing more than a puppet, which means peace will never be sustainable. Through this walk, we want to bring the attention of the entire nation in general and world community in particular for our call for sustainable peace in our land.”
